Missouri Botanical Garden: A  St. Louis Ridesharing Destination in Bloom

Since admission is free for St. Louis city and county residents until noon on Wednesdays (and they require proof of residency at the admission counter, so be sure to bring your driver’s license or ID with you, and remind any adults coming with you to do the same), we decided to visit March 22 to save a little money. We weren’t the only ones with that idea, because the main lot was packed, and while the other lot still had ample free parking, it was filling up fast! Unlike most other attractions in the St. Louis metro, the Missouri Botanical Garden chooses to charge admission and offer free parking rather than charging for parking and offering free admission. Missouri Botanical Gardens also offers reasonably priced membership plans that more than pay for themselves within a few visits.

Missouri Botanical Garden: The Orchid Show

We recently took a break from work to take in the annual Orchid show at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Orchids are Michael’s favorite flower, so they wanted to catch the show before it ended March 26.

Our main reason for visiting the Missouri Botanical Garden was, of course, to catch the aforementioned orchid show. Tickets to the show were not included with admission, but it was definitely worth the price! The layout was beautifully done, and the specimens in the main part of the exhibit were arranged in such a way that they looked as if they had grown in place without any human help.

The exhibit focused on vanilla this year, and Michael learned that vanilla flavoring comes from orchids. He was amazed to learn that his favorite flower wasn’t just another pretty bloom. Several different sections talked about how the specific orchid used in vanilla production, vanilla planifolia, was cultivated, harvested, and processed to produce the genuine vanilla extract that adds flavor to many foods and drinks that we enjoy. Other sections educated visitors about other orchids and their myriad uses throughout the world.

The soft music combined with the ambient nature sounds helped create an environment that was peaceful as well as beautiful and educational. We’ll be sure to catch the orchid show again next year. We’re looking forward to learning even more about Michael’s favorite flower!

Missouri Botanical Garden: A Pokémon Go, St. Louis Ridesharing Destination

In addition to offering breathtaking beauty and educational opportunities for plant lovers of all ages, Missouri Botanical Garden is also very welcoming to Pokemon Go players. They even have a section of their website that has tips for players. With over 40 Pokestops on the grounds and multiple Gyms, it’s definitely a great place to both take in nature and catch ‘em all!

Missouri Botanical Garden: An All Year, St. Louis Ridesharing Destination

For all of our readers who are rideshare drivers, you can be sure that you’ll be picking up and dropping off many passengers here, and not just during the day. Missouri Botanical Garden has a wide variety of evening events throughout the year, but one of their most popular by far is the Annual Garden Glow that runs from mid-November to January 1 (check the website for the exact dates for the 2017 Garden Glow).

The Missouri Botanical Garden’s ability to combine aesthetics and education makes it a great place to visit. Many of the exhibits are accessible to all visitors, and Missouri Botanical Garden is constantly striving to improve their access so that all visitors can see and fully appreciate every exhibit.

Missouri Botanical Garden is definitely a must-go destination for couples who enjoy nature and want to enjoy time together that doesn’t involve the standard “dinner and a movie” cliché. However, if you do decide to stop for a snack or meal, Missouri Botanical Garden has a cafe located in the visitors’ center.

Smoking is prohibited on the Missouri Botanical Garden property, which is something we didn’t know at the time of our visit. They also have free Wi-Fi available, but the signal doesn’t have a consistent strength throughout the grounds. (However, that’s only a problem if you’re trying to upload photos to social media or play Pokemon Go without maxing out your data plan.)

All that being said, Smiley Sharing wholeheartedly recommends visiting the Missouri Botanical Garden.
